How RotaProof proves files haven't changed
The fingerprint taken when you upload, and what it does and doesn't prove.
What's a fingerprint?
When you upload a file, RotaProof works out a long code from its exact contents. Change even one tiny detail of the file and the code comes out completely different. That code is the file's fingerprint. (Technically, it's called a SHA-256 hash.)
How it's used
- RotaProof saves the fingerprint the moment the file is uploaded.
- When you download an inspection pack, RotaProof works out each file's fingerprint again.
- The
manifest.csvin the pack compares the two. The column file_unchanged_since_upload says yes if they match, NO if the file has changed, or MISSING if the file can't be found.
What it proves, and what it doesn't
| It proves | It doesn't prove |
|---|---|
| The file is exactly the same as when it was uploaded to RotaProof. | That the document itself is genuine, or that the check was done correctly. |
This guide explains how to use RotaProof. It isn't legal advice. For the rules themselves, the Home Office's employer's guide to right to work checks is the final word.
