The Home Office Employer Checking Service
For people waiting on a Home Office decision about an application or appeal.
When to use it
Use the Home Office Employer Checking Service when someone can't prove their right to work in the usual way because they have an application or appeal waiting for a Home Office decision, for example if they applied to extend their visa before it ran out.
How it works
- Ask the Home Office to check. You request a check through GOV.UK with the person's details.
- Wait for the answer. If they're allowed to work, the Home Office sends a Positive Verification Notice.
- Save the notice. Keep a copy, as a PDF or a clear image.
- Record it in RotaProof. In step 1 choose An application or appeal that's still waiting. RotaProof picks the Employer Checking Service for you. Set the permission end date to 6 months after the notice, tick the checklist and upload the notice.
A notice only protects you for 6 months. RotaProof won't let you set a later end date, and it will remind you to check them again before then.
The Home Office explains the service in its employer's guide.
This guide explains how to use RotaProof. It isn't legal advice. For the rules themselves, the Home Office's employer's guide to right to work checks is the final word.
